10 years ago if you talked to someone about the potential for a computer controlled smart mattress to be taking the world by storm, you’d have been called crazy. But things are progressing so quickly these days that it’s now a reality…
Today we’re going to take a look at what is probably the most advanced mattress on the market – the Eight mattress. We’re going to be using their mid-priced option – the Eight Jupiter mattress as our example product, but 2 other kinds of Eight mattress are available.
We’re going to see what kind of materials it uses, we’re going to look at the technology itself, and we’re going to answer some frequently asked questions. At the end o this article we’re going to review the Eight mattress impartially and give you our honest opinion…
Is it all hype? Or is it going to change the world?
Let’s find out.
Key Components To The Eight Mattress
Before we get into the technology of the product, let’s start where we always start – with the material and design of the layers that you’ll find inside.
This is a 4-layer hybrid product that combines different materials to make a mattress that can benefit from their individual strengths while mitigating their weaknesses.
Top Layer – Reactive Foam
Reactive foam is a reasonably new invention in the world of mattress design. It’s not a proprietary material and we’ve seen it in other products, but it is still quite a rare sight “in the wild”.
It’s designed to be contouring in a similar way to memory foam, and while it’s not as supportive as memory foam – it’s not far off. However, the benefits reactive foam has over memory foam (as a trade-off for the reduced contouring) are more than worth it in certain cases.
For example, memory foam is known to get hot throughout the night, but reactive foam does not. When it’s being used in a top layer like this, this is super important as it’s in direct contact with the sleeper. Reactive foam has also got some latex like properties, which means the contouring starts working from the moment you lie down on the mattress (memory foam takes a little while longer as it needs body heat to warm up and start the process).
Second Layer – Standard Memory Foam
The second layer down is made from a reasonably standard memory foam – which means it runs the risk of overheating. There’s no cooling technology at all at play here (i.e cooling gel or open cell), which is a slight concern.
In all honesty, it’s probably not that much of a problem as the layer is not in direct contact with the sleeper and the reactive foam is more than capable of handling thermal regulation on its own.
That being said, the memory foam provides the contouring that the reactive foam above cannot. When the two layers work hand in hand with one another you get a supportive, comfortable, and reactive sleeping surface that’s a joy to lie down on.
Third Layer – Transition Foam
The third layer down is a 2-inch-thick layer of transition foam. This is a medium density comfort foam that is mainly used to isolate movement between sleeping partners. It also serves the purpose of softening the gradient between the upper softer layers and the firm base layer below.
Fourth Layer – Support Foam
The final layer in this product is made from super high-density support foam. It’s not all that interesting (as is usually the case) and there’s not much to say here. It provides the strong and stable base required for the upper layers to do their job correctly. It’s a high quality, yet uninspiring material that gets the job done.
So now we get into the good stuff – the technology.
The Eight mattress is a smart mattress that connects to an app you can use on your phone or tablet (Apple or Android). The technology helps you assess and compare how well you’re sleeping throughout the night and provides suggestions on how you can improve.
It measures your sleeping habits through a series of wires that are located in the removable cover of the mattress. Because of this, it is very important that the cover is properly fitted to your mattress and is pulled tight – you’ll get inaccurate data if it’s not.
The wires are then connected to a mini computer that’s also a transmitter that connects to your app. This means you’re going to have to plug in your bed – which is a sensation that is as strange as it sounds.
You’ll get a sleep score throughout the night which grades your sleep, you’ll find out if your tossing and turning, you’ll see if you’re getting enough sleep (or too much), you’ll see how warm your bed was throughout the night, and you’ll see if you are getting enough deep sleep too.
You can even use your bed as an alarm clock to wake you up when you’re in the right stage of the sleep cycle to prevent grogginess in the morning!
We’re mattress nerds, so we think this is possibly the most exciting thing that has ever been done with a computer in the history of mankind…
But even if you’re not a mattress nerd, you’re going to be surprised by how interesting and addictive it is to see what you’ve been up to while asleep. Many people actively find themselves trying to improve their sleep score for fun – which in turn improves their overall sleeping habits!
Eight Mattress Coupons
The Eight mattress has another one of those “fake countdown timers” on their website that claims there’s a discount that will expire in a certain amount of time. This isn’t the case and you can usually come back the next day and you’ll be offered the discount again.
The discount is sizeable and will give you up to $250 off an Eight mattress. The amount of discount you receive depends on the size and type of mattress you’re buying.
This is a couponless discount, so there’s no code required to activate it. Simply add your mattress to your cart and you’ll automatically have the discount applied!
Note: Don’t take our word for this, if you see the discount on offer and you decide to wait and it disappears – that’s on you! We recommend buying ASAP, just in case.
How Much Does A Eight Mattress Cost?
As you can imagine, all this technology isn’t cheap. But that being said, it’s not prohibitively expensive either.
- Full – $999
- Queen – $1,099
- King – $1,299
- California King -$1,299
Eight Mattress Review
So, now we know about the fancy technology (and fancy materials) that makes up the Eight mattress. We also have an idea of how much it’s going to cost and the discounts that are available. Armed with all that information we’re now going to give you our brutally honest impartial opinion of the product in our Eight mattress review section.
This is a very supportive mattress, which should come as no surprise considering the amount it costs. The reactive foam layer works hand in hand with the memory foam layer above to provide responsive support throughout. The combination of these materials reacts to the pressure applied to the mattress and ensures you’ve got support where you need it and a little slack where you don’t.
This mattress does its best to try and maintain a constant 97 degrees throughout the night through what Eight call their “Bedroom AC” technology. This setting can be changed to suit your preferences, and when set at minimum temperature – it’s a super cool sleeping surface.
You can also heat or cool individual sides of the bed via the app, so if your sleeping partner likes to sleep warm but you like it cool – you can both have exactly what you want. You can actually track the real-time temperature throughout the night using the app when you wake up in the morning.
It’s innovative, effective, and quite honestly, as mattress nerds – it’s a whole heap of fun!
The reactive foam top layer of this product is extremely comfortable. We especially like the responsiveness of how it instantly conforms to your body shape without the delay you’d expect from memory foam. When you adjust your sleeping position during the night you’re going to really appreciate this.
The mattress has a lofty and responsive feel to it, it has got the perfect amount of bounce for most people’s tastes. The covering is soft and luxurious, and the plush feeling of the responsive foam will have you feeling like you’re floating on top of the mattress – despite being cradled by it.
Despite this not being a cheap product, we actually think it’s great value for money. Without the smart technology this would still be a reasonable price considering the quality of materials that have been used in its construction…
But with all the additional functionality of the app and the $250 discount code – it’s honestly a bargain!

Commonly Asked Questions:
Does The Eight Mattress Come With A Warranty?
Yes, Eight offers a 10-year warranty against all manufacturing defects on their mattresses. This is quite honestly a little on the short side considering the price of the product, but when you take into account their reputation for exceptional build quality – it’s not really going to be an issue.
Anecdotally we found a couple of reviews that talked about claiming against their warranty. It seemed to be a smooth and easy process that dealt with a US call center and had repairs or a replacement sorted out quickly.
Is The Eight Mattress A Firm Or Soft Mattress?
This is a medium firm product that is around 6.5 on the firmness scale. This is considered to be in the middle of the “Goldilocks zone” for mattress firmness – which is why most products will be a 6.5 – 7 on the scale. Most of you reading this will enjoy the level of firmness of the Eight.
Note: Due to this, if you’re looking for something super firm or super soft – then this isn’t the product for you.
Does The Eight Mattress Sleep Hot Or Cold?
One of the beautiful things about this product is that it can sleep as hot or as cold as you would like. When you’ve turned their “Bedroom AC” system all the way off, it’s a very cool sleeping surface that will satisfy the warmest of sleepers. When you turn it on, you can have it as warm as you’d want it to be (within reason).
This is particularly enjoyable in the winter!
How Long Will The Eight Mattress Last?
Despite the 10-year warranty, you should be able to get a good 15 years of use out of this mattress before you consider replacing it.
Is The Eight Mattress Good For A Side, Stomach Or Back Sleeper?
The combination of the reactive foam layer and the memory foam layer make this a mattress that is suitable for people of all sleeping positions. Pressure will be applied where you need it, and it won’t be applied where you don’t.
We Recommend The Eight Mattress For Someone That:
Likes Technology – If you’re the kind of person that loves messing around with the latest gadgets or upgrading your home to a smart home – then this is the mattress for you. It’s so much fun!
Wants To Get A Better Night’s Sleep – The data and recommendations that are provided by the Eight app will undoubtedly improve your sleeping habits. If you wake up feeling sluggish and unrested, the Eight might be able to help.
So there you have it, that’s what we think about one of the most advanced mattresses on the planet.
The Eight might seem a little bit gimmicky at first, but honestly, the functionality it has can really improve the quality of your sleep. It’s one of those things that you’re going to find it hard to imagine how you lived without.
It’s a great product, that’s reasonably priced. And if you think you’re going to get use out of the technology it provides – we highly recommend you give it some serious consideration.
