Today we’re going to take a look at an up and coming mattress brand that has their sights set on the top spots that are currently occupied by the well-established titans of the mattress world.

Their biggest selling point is that they provide customers with a choice that most of the “mattress in a box” companies don’t. They’ve got 3 different products, in 3 different firmness levels – allowing you to tailor your sleeping experience to be just the way you like it (without breaking the bank).

We’re going to take a look at all 3 of Live and Sleep’s mattresses to see what we like and don’t like about them in a detailed review. We’re also going to answer some frequently asked questions before giving you our overall recommendation about the brand.

Key Components of a Live and Sleep Mattress

We’re going to start off with the longest and most important section of this review – the construction breakdown. In this part of the article, we’re going to look at every single material and layer that has been included in the various mattresses that Live and Sleep have on offer. We’re going see what we like (or don’t like) about how they are made and the materials they have chosen.

All 3 of the products that Live and Sleep have on offer at the moment are hybrid products. This is an advanced (but very common) design pattern that uses several different materials layered on top of one another. This allows brands to combine their properties to make a final product that’s much more than something that is simply the sum of its parts.

The three products Live and Sleep have on the market at present are:

• The Classic – Their cheapest and lowest quality product, it has a medium-soft firmness
• The Elite – This is Live and Sleep’s mid-range product with a firm firmness level
• The Luxury – The most expensive mattress that Live and Sleep produce, it’s a medium firm product

This section is going to be a little bit different to how we normally do a construction breakdown – because some of the materials below are only going to be in some of the mattresses that Live and Sleep produce. So be sure to remember that not all of their products will contain all of the materials that we’re about to cover.

Breathable Cover

All of Live and Sleep’s mattresses will have this soft cover on them. It’s very breathable which allows hot air to enter and escape the mattress reasonably easily. It’s removable and machine washable, but in all honesty, it’s pretty standard – regardless of how much Live and Sleep try and dress it up with marketing speak.

Memory Foam

No good mattress these days can command a premium price tag without some kind of memory foam (or memory foam alternative) in its design. This is a layer of a super high-quality memory foam that makes up the top layer of all of the mattresses Live and Sleep produces.

You may be surprised to know that not all memory foam is created equally, there are varying levels of quality of the material – and it’s hard for consumers to know which products use good quality foam, and which products use bad quality foam.

We’re mattress nerds, however, and we can tell the difference.

This is one of the highest quality memory foams that money can buy. It’s got a plush feel to it, and the contouring action is extremely accurate (which means it’s super supportive too).

The main benefit this foam has over lower quality memory foams is the speed at which it will contour to your body. Normal memory foam takes a few minutes to complete the contouring process when you first get into bed as it requires some body heat to get started.

This high-quality memory foam still needs heat to complete the contouring process – but it’s much quicker than normal. We know this sounds like a small benefit, but if you’re considering one of these mattresses as an upgrade to your current memory foam mattress, you’re going to notice the difference.

Cooling Gel Memory Foam

Now, we realize we’ve been talking very highly about the memory foam in the top layer of these products – but there is one huge problem with it that we really dislike…

It has no cooling technology.

As you probably already know, memory foam has a pretty bad reputation for overheating and being a little too warm for comfort. It has this overheating issue because the material was never designed to be used in mattresses – it was made for airplane seats (by NASA).

It’s a very difficult problem to solve because the thing that causes the overheating issues is also the same thing that gives memory foam its contouring properties…

Inside memory foam there are several individual cells of air. When you get on a memory foam mattress the cells compress and the mattress contours to your body, when you get off they pop back to their original shape. This is also why it takes a little time for memory foam to contour completely (because the cell walls need a little heat to soften slightly).

Throughout the night, body heat is going to enter your mattress, and in a memory foam product, it will make its way inside these cells. The cells are completely enclosed, and as such, the air cannot escape. This trapped air creates a snowball effect, and hotspots form underneath the sleeper quite quickly.

One of the most successful ways that engineers came up with to solve this problem is by adding a cooling gel into the foam before it has hardened.

Despite what you may think from the name, cooling gel does not cool the mattress down – it just spreads the heat out. There are various different materials that cooling gel can be made from, but they are all chosen for a similar property that they share – they’re excellent thermal conductors.

When heat enters the mattress the cooling gel absorbs it before it has the chance to penetrate the cells and warm up the trapped air. The gel then spreads the heat out among the entire surface of the mattress (via the other gel) and distributes it evenly. This means that while the same amount of heat is still in the mattress (more or less) it is now much less concentrated underneath the sleeper.

This eliminates hotspots and gives the “illusion” of a cooler mattress. It’s super effective, and it’s one of the best ways to cool down memory foam products.

The concentration and distribution of the cooling gel inside memory foam have quite a big impact on the performance the gel provides. For the gel to work properly it needs a consistent “network” of pathways of gel to share the heat with – if there are any blockages hot spots can form easily.

This is a high-quality memory foam, and the distribution of cooling gel inside of it is exceptional. Normally this level of performance would make Live and Sleep’s products some of the coolest memory foam mattresses on the market.

But they’ve messed up a little bit here…

For the cooling gel to work properly, it needs to ideally be in direct contact with the sleeper. This is where the heat is generated, and it’s where the gel is more effective.

If you’ve got another layer of material on the top of the mattress that’s pretty good at thermal regulation (like latex or open cell memory foam) then it’s still beneficial to use cooling gel in lower layers – it gives the mattress even more cooling power.

But Live and Sleep use standard memory foam in their top layer.

Standard memory foam has no cooling technology in it, and it suffers from the overheating cell-based problem we talked about earlier. This means hotspots can form before the heat has the chance to make its way down into the cooling gel layer underneath.

We cannot imagine for the life of us why Live and Sleep have done this. Whatever benefits the mattress has from using the normal memory foam on the top layer are almost certainly going to be outweighed by the heating issues this design pattern causes.

High-Density Support Foam

This is a super boring material that’s very standard. Don’t hold that against Live and Sleep too much though – this is normal in most mattresses. You’ll find this layer in every product that Live and Sleep creates, it’s made from a high-quality high-density support foam and it provides a strong and stable base for the stuff above to rest on, but that’s about it.

Live and Sleep Mattress Review

Ok, so at this point in the article we know a little bit about what kind of materials you’re going to get in Live and Sleep’s line of products, and we also know how much they cost.

Let’s see what we think about the mattress in the most important categories in this review section.

Comfort

There’s no denying that this is a super comfortable mattress. The quality of the memory foam on the top layer of all 3 of these products is exceptional, it cradles you gently and has a super plush feel to it – even in the firmer products that they create. We can’t imagine anyone being able to complain about the comfort levels of these mattresses – especially considering the price point they are being sold at.

Support

Again Live and Sleep get top marks in the support department. The two layers of memory foam you will find in most of their products work well with one another. The high quality of the top layer helps provide additional support here, and you’re going to get a great night’s sleep with proper spinal alignment regardless of your sleeping position.

Cooling

This is our biggest problem with Live and Sleep, and we really think they’ve dropped the ball here.

The breathable soft knit cover is exceptionally good at promoting ventilation of hot air throughout the mattress. Similarly, the quality of the cooling gel in the second memory foam layer that’s in 2 of their products works brilliantly too.

But we are shocked that they buried this cooling gel underneath a layer of normal memory foam. We’ve looked long and hard at the specifications of these mattresses and we cannot understand why they have done this.

The upper layer of memory foam will create hotspots, and it’s going to warm up throughout the night. Admittedly the cooling gel memory foam layer below the normal memory foam layer will help slightly and it’s not going to be as bad as it could be – but it’s far from ideal.

Remember, this covered cooling gel is the best case scenario for Live and Sleep.

Their cheapest product (the Classic) doesn’t even have cooling gel inside of it. It’s going to sleep very warm, and we advise against buying it. There are much better products on the market in terms of cooling in this price bracket.

Value

If it wasn’t for the cooling gel issues we talked about above, we’d say that these products are good value for money. But to be honest, the problem has changed our opinion of the brand. You can get better products for a similar amount of money, and while this doesn’t make Live and Sleep’s mattresses a “no go” from us – it certainly makes us think twice about recommending them.

Yes, they do! In fact, Live and Sleep have one of the most generous warranties on the market. They will cover you against manufacturing defects for 20 years as standard (so there’s no additional charge for this protection).

We’ve never dealt with Live and Sleep’s customer service department before, but anecdotally they seem to be very friendly and efficient. You simply call the company up (at their US-based call center) and they will send someone out to either collect and replace your mattress – or repair it for you as quickly as possible.

Do Live and Sleep Mattresses Sleep Cool Or Hot?

Despite what we’ve said above, the two most expensive mattresses from Live and Sleep are not that bad in terms of cooling. The problem could be much worse. You may notice some hotspots forming throughout the night, but they’re not going to be “deal breakers” that make you regret your purchase.

The Classic product, however, is terrible in terms of cooling. There’s no cooling gel layer, and the standard memory foam on top has nothing to help it distribute heat – you’re going to be dealing with the full force of the overheating issues we complained about in the construction overview at the start of this article.

How Long Do Live and Sleep Mattresses Last?

These are decent products that use premium materials inside of them. They have been designed to stand the test of time and they are going to give you at least 15 years of usage before you notice any kind of degradation in their performance.

Are Live and Sleep Mattresses Good For Side, Back Or Stomach Sleepers?

All 3 of Live and Sleep’s products are going to be good for various sleeping positions, regardless of if you sleep on your stomach, back, or side.

Memory foam is an exceptionally adaptive material that’s going to spread your body weight out evenly and remove pressure points that could cause issues. This also creates good spinal alignment for side sleepers – who have the most demanding needs of a mattress.

We Recommend Live and Sleep Mattresses For People That:

1. Want Brilliant Levels Of Support – There’s no denying that the amount of support that’s provided by the two upper layers of memory foam in some of Live and Sleep’s products are exceptionally supportive. They may not be configured for optimal cooling, but the quality of the materials and their contouring properties are second to none.
2. Want A Choice Of Firmness – Most of the new brands that have taken the “mattress in a box” world by storm only offer their products in medium firm varieties. It’s nice to see a brand that is providing customers a choice who might not like the firmness of medium firm products.

Conclusion

So there you have it, that’s what we think about Live and Sleep and their mattresses.

Quite honestly we are kind of conflicted about this brand.

On one hand, there’s no denying that they do make exceptionally comfortable and supportive products. The materials that they use are of a very high quality and the contouring properties of the memory foam layers are world class.

We’ve got no complaints in terms of support or comfort whatsoever, but the cooling gel issue is the biggest problem for us.

First of all, we want to say that we flat out recommend that you avoid the “classic” product at all costs. It’s almost insulting that Live and Sleep are trying to sell a product with a standard memory foam top layer (without cooling technology) at this kind of price point. It’s a warm and uncomfortable product – and you can get far better mattresses for the same kind of price.

The Elite and Luxury products aren’t uncomfortably hot sleeping surfaces, the cooling gel definitely helps dissipate heat despite it not being optimally positioned in the mattress. We’re willing to bet that you’re going to have a great night’s sleep on them unless you’re known to sleep very hot throughout the night.

So we feel that the Luxury and Elite aren’t bad products, and they provide a reasonable amount of value considering their price. But the difficulty we’re having is that we know that there are better products out there in this price bracket (like the Nectar) and we’re struggling to see why we would recommend Live and Sleep over them.

So to wrap this up, we could understand why you’d buy the Elite and Luxury mattresses from Live and Sleep – they’re perfectly fine products.

But you can get more for your money if you look elsewhere.
